Picked 2 Perfection

July 31, 2008 at 4:44 pm (Uncategorized)

I came across an organization that is based out of Dinuba/Reedley area that is really cool.  Picked 2 Perfection is a fund raising organization that uses fresh fruit and gift baskets as the tool.  You pre-sale the boxes and keep $10 from every box sold at $25 a piece.  It is open to any individual, group or organization to raise money for camp, mission trips, etc.

The Gift of Life

July 26, 2008 at 12:24 am (Life) (, )

Tonight was a very special night.  My extended family celebrated life with my Dad’s liver donor’s Mother, Roxanne, and her grandson, Kevin.  We shared dinner at “Fresh Start Cafe” in Reedley, where we shared in fellowship over some great food.  After dinner there was a time for people to share their experiences of the events leading up to and after the transplant.

Roxanne was gracious enough to share her experience of finding out her son was in a mountain climbing accident and would have to fight for his life.  David, my Dad’s donor, had fallen 1400 feet down Mt. Shasta and had massive vertebrae and brain damage.  He eventually was pronounced brain dead which made him a candidate for organ donation.  Many people had been praying for a liver to extend my Dad’s life, but also knew it would cost another family a loved one.  All I can really say is God is in control.

Long story short, my family was blessed beyond belief with the gift of life.  But we could not have imagined how much we would be blessed by the family of David.  We believe and know undoubtedly that David’s life was not lived in vain.  We remember the sacrifice David’s family had to endure and although we can’t bring him back, we can celebrate the life he lived.

I met Roxanne tonight for only the second time since God brought us together nearly 8 years ago and felt I had a relationship with her that did not have a 7 year break.  The Fast family considers Roxanne and her family part of ours.

If I can ask you this one thing it is this.  Consider long and hard becoming an organ donor if you haven’t already.  Go to www.donatelifecalifornia.org to find more information and sign up as an organ donor.  Also, if you have any questions please ask me.  You can leave a comment or email me at michaelfast@gmail.com

If any family and friends would like to share their stories I encourage you to share them in the comments.

Bush vs Batman

July 25, 2008 at 12:02 pm (Uncategorized)

I can’t take credit for this post.  GENE posted it earlier today and I thought it was worthy enough to re-post.  It takes a look at the similarities of George W. and Batman from a political standpoint.

By ANDREW KLAVAN
July 25, 2008; Page A15

A cry for help goes out from a city beleaguered by violence and fear: A beam of light flashed into the night sky, the dark symbol of a bat projected onto the surface of the racing clouds . . .

Oh, wait a minute. That’s not a bat, actually. In fact, when you trace the outline with your finger, it looks kind of like . . . a “W.”

There seems to me no question that the Batman film “The Dark Knight,” currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war. Like W, Batman is vilified and despised for confronting terrorists in the only terms they understand. Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past.

And like W, Batman understands that there is no moral equivalence between a free society — in which people sometimes make the wrong choices — and a criminal sect bent on destruction. The former must be cherished even in its moments of folly; the latter must be hounded to the gates of Hell.

“The Dark Knight,” then, is a conservative movie about the war on terror. And like another such film, last year’s “300,” “The Dark Knight” is making a fortune depicting the values and necessities that the Bush administration cannot seem to articulate for beans.

Conversely, time after time, left-wing films about the war on terror — films like “In The Valley of Elah,” “Rendition” and “Redacted” — which preach moral equivalence and advocate surrender, that disrespect the military and their mission, that seem unable to distinguish the difference between America and Islamo-fascism, have bombed more spectacularly than Operation Shock and Awe.

Why is it then that left-wingers feel free to make their films direct and realistic, whereas Hollywood conservatives have to put on a mask in order to speak what they know to be the truth? Why is it, indeed, that the conservative values that power our defense — values like morality, faith, self-sacrifice and the nobility of fighting for the right — only appear in fantasy or comic-inspired films like “300,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Narnia,” “Spiderman 3″ and now “The Dark Knight”?

The moment filmmakers take on the problem of Islamic terrorism in realistic films, suddenly those values vanish. The good guys become indistinguishable from the bad guys, and we end up denigrating the very heroes who defend us. Why should this be?

The answers to these questions seem to me to be embedded in the story of “The Dark Knight” itself: Doing what’s right is hard, and speaking the truth is dangerous. Many have been abhorred for it, some killed, one crucified.

Thirsty Thursday: Opportunities

July 24, 2008 at 11:17 pm (Thirsty Thursday) ()

I watched “Evan Almighty” this evening.  I was expecting some good laughs from the one and only Steve Carell.  It had some good lines, but there was one sequence that took me by surprise.  It comes when Evan’s wife has taken the kids and they are now in a diner while Evan keeps working away on building the ark.  It made me think about a couple things:

1. What am I praying for?

2. What am I expecting in the answer?

Stay with me…I know you are probably thinking I am going off on a limb here.  Here is what I was getting at.

“If someone prays for patience, do you think God gives them patience? Or does He give them the opportunity to be patient…

“If they pray for courage, does God give them courage? Or does He give them opportunities to be courageous…

“If someone prays for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings? Or does He give them opportunities to love each other…

So I end with this simple question.  Where are the opportunities God has placed in our lives?

Here is the clip from the movie

Don’t Play with Guns

July 23, 2008 at 9:32 pm (Comedy)

This video is kinda tongue in cheek because guns are not something to be ‘played’ with.  But this video was absolutely hilarious.  This guys wife was playing with his new gun and so he used some black cats to scare her half to death.

“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.”

–John Wooden

“Baseball players are not born great. They’re not born batters or pitchers or managers, and luck isn’t a key factor. No one has come up with a substitute for hard work. I’ve never met a great baseball player who didn’t have to work harder at learning to play baseball than anything else he ever did. To me it was the greatest fun I ever had, which probably explains why today I feel both humility and pride, because God let me play the game and learn to be good at it…Baseball gives every American boy a chance to excel, not just to be as good as someone else but to be better than someone else. This is the nature of man and the name of the game…I’m grateful and I know how lucky I was to have been born in America and had a chance to play the game I loved, the greatest game of them all, BASEBALL.”

Trying to Bake

July 20, 2008 at 10:43 am (Picture Posts)

I attempted to make biscuits this morning.  Normally I would just go to the store and buy the can, but I this morning I tried something different.  They did taste like biscuits though!
