Election Thoughts

October 22, 2008 at 3:01 pm (Wisdom) ()

A friend of mine wrote a status update on Facebook that was very thought provoking especially given the canidates for the presidency.

“If you put your faith in the government to solve your problems, what does God get?”

What are your thoughts on this with how it relates to our responsibility to the government [give to Cesar what is Cesar's] and being a follower of God?

I just read an encouraging article by J Piper on the Desiring God Blog. Here’s the link: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/TasteAndSee/ByDate/2008/3347_Let_Christians_Vote_As_Though_They_Were_Not_Voting/
After studying Daniel last year I am more confident in God’s soveriegnty in all things including placing men in power and taking them down. The question for me is, am I glorifying HIM and his way and wisdom by the way I vote? Well thats my 2 cents, cousin. Love ya!

I agree with the comment. I believe that government can do good and evil… most of the time (if not all) they will do both. Our role as the church is to:

    Speak truth to power
Help the victims of government… whoever they are (and yes… the government has vicitms).

These are things that are to be done every single day. We should not put our faith in governments but that does not mean that we should not try to call them to be more just. We should not get comfortable if “my candidate” or “my party” gets in because they are all fallen human entities that need the church to speak truth to them.
